Computer Eyestrain

If you work with computers and spend long periods of time staring at the monitor, you will likely experience symptoms of computer eyestrain: Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), Asthenopia and others. Although considered temporary and not proven to cause any permanent consequences, they still can be quite unpleasant and disruptive.

Symptoms:

  • Eye fatigue; burning or itching eyes
  • Dry eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Headaches, neck pain
  • Difficulties focusing on near objects

Treatment

  • Take a break: from time to time shift your focus to something other than the screen. Every hour or so, stand up, move around, stretch and look at distant objects through the window (If you get easily carried away with your work and forget to rest, use a reminder software like WorkPause).
  • Blink often: make a point to consciously blink your eyes more frequently. This helps replenish the tear film and reduce the eye dryness. You can also use artificial eye drops for lubricating the eye.
  • Follow the "20-20-20" rule: every 20 minutes focus your eyes for 20 seconds at some object at least 20 feet (~6 meters) away. Alternatively, close your eyes for 20 seconds every 20 minutes.
  • Consider wearing "Computer glasses" to help focusing on near objects and reduce glares.
  • Increase the font size of your monitor.
  • If you use CRT monitor, make sure the screen refresh rate is at least 75Hz to reduce flickering. If possible, switch to LCD.
  • Sit at least 20 inches (50 cm) from the monitor, and position it so you look downwards at it.
  • Eliminate glare and screen reflections; try not to face windows or bright light sources.
  • If the symptoms persist, this can be sign of more serious problem. Do consult your doctor.
